Less about the soccer and more about being a Portland Timbers fan.

It’s 2026 and we’re having to go through this again… The franchise structure that allows a team to move to a new city at the whim or spite of an owner is one of the worst things about professional sports in America. Yes the Whitecaps are Canadian, and they should remain Canadian. The should remain in Vancouver. Despite having a massively successful 2025 season where they were runners up in both the CONCACAF Champions Cup and the MLS Cup, and Canada Cup, The Whitecaps are the least profitable club in MLS. Read about it in the Guardian, and the Athletic (paywall). Part of the reason the club is up for sale and can’t find a buyer: A terrible agreement they have with their landlords at B.C Place. That agreement has run out.. The Portland Timbers don’t won their stadium, so it seems like the Whitecaps should be able to make that work. Another reason: MLS has drastically changed in the past decade, and players are getting paid better. Still, the Whitecaps have managed to attract world class talent in Thomas Müller, granted it sounds like there were extenuating circumstances.

Despite the fact that the Whitecaps have owned the Timbers in 25 and 26, They have always felt like our pesky little Cascadian brothers. I’ve never felt the hatred towards them that approaches my revulsion towards the Sounders. It would be a tragedy if the MLS ownership group gave into their greed and allowed the team to move to Las Vegas. Unfortunately, Ryan Reynolds isn’t going to have the cash to pull this one off unless he sells Wrexham.
