FROM 1970s Soccer USA: Happy 61st birthday to Canada international Dale Mitchell, the sturdy striker who played in the 1984 Olympic Games and the 1986 FIFA World Cup and shone at the club level, bagging 43 goals in 106 games for the Vancouver Whitecaps (1977-78), Portland Timbers (1979-82) and Montreal Manic (1983) to finish among the Top 50 goalscorers in NASL history, coached the Canadian national team from 2007-09, was named to Canada’s all/time XI in 2012, and capped his career with election to the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame (2002) and the Indoor Soccer Hall of Fame (2014).
